Mr Alan Purves

Associate Dentist

MPharm (Strathclyde 2006)

BDS (Aberdeen 2015)

GDC 258242

“I chose dentistry as I saw it as an ever-evolving profession, full of clinical challenges and opportunities. Every new technique I learn is aimed at providing increasingly predictable and reliable results for my patients, using minimally invasive techniques to achieve a natural, beautiful result.

It’s exciting to be at the cutting edge of what we can do as clinicians. But the joy in dentistry for me still comes from the simple things, such as alleviating pain, building a patient’s trust to embark on treatment and delivering the smile they have always deserved.”

St Andrews, Scotland

Alan qualified as a pharmacist before converting to dentistry with a BDS from the University of Aberdeen, giving him a holistic and systematic approach to treatment that has been enhanced with further postgraduate training.

In 2017, he undertook a year-long post at the well-respected Glasgow Dental Hospital and Paisley’s Royal Alexandria Hospital, where he was mentored by some of the country’s leading specialists in restorative dentistry and gained valuable experience working with nervous patients.

Alan has continued his professional development with highly-regarded and forward-thinking dental specialists from the UK and the United States to ensure his patients benefit from the latest, clinically-proven treatment options.

Alan has over 7 years’ experience in both NHS and private practices in Glasgow, Central Scotland and Galashiels and trains newly qualified dentists on prescribing and medical conditions management for NHS Education For Scotland.

Special interests

  • Management of severe tooth wear (rebuilding worn-down teeth)
  • Biomimetic dentistry (restoring extremely damaged teeth to mimic their original appearance and function, helping teeth last for decades)
  • Minimally invasive dentistry (conserving tooth structure and minimising the need for root treatment in the long term)

After hours

When he’s not wearing dental scrubs, you’ll find Alan out in the forests around Innerleithen on his mountain bike, training for the next amateur enduro race.

He and his wife have also embarked on converting a yellow VW campervan for adventures with their 5-year-old son, Jenson.
