Mr Duncan Weir

Implant Dentist

BDS MFDS
ClinImpDent

“I love performing life-changing surgeries. It’s the thrill you get when you’ve fitted a full arch implant on someone who’s hidden their teeth for years – it’s extremely rewarding.

I chose implants specifically because I’ve always had a keen interest in surgical dentistry and I love doing aesthetic dentistry. I’m a total perfectionist about
making things look good as well as making my patients’ implants a success.”

Born

Edinburgh, Scotland

Training

Duncan graduated from the prestigious University of Glasgow Dental School
in 2009 having obtained the Board of Management prize for his work in relation to periodontal treatment. He then completed his foundation training working in a variety of disciplines before going to Birmingham to learn about restorative care
– in which implants feature heavily. Once complete, he relocated to Australia for two years to gain further experience.

On his return to the UK, Duncan passed his membership exams for the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh at the earliest opportunity. And he completed
a two-year Diploma in dental implants at the University of Newcastle where he was placed top of his year achieving Honours (the only person to achieve this accolade). He has since undertaken training at worldleading centres and with clinicians from Dubai, Australia and South Africa – to name just a few.

Career

Duncan’s clinical time is almost entirely implant related. As well as working at The
Gentle Touch every Tuesday, he travels to different practices throughout Scotland.

Duncan also mentors candidates who are doing implant training and is a key opinion leader for Southern Implants. In addition, Duncan teaches modular courses to dentists at Edinburgh Dental Institute and lectures around the UK.

Special interests

  • Biomimetic dentistry (optimal bonding of white fillings and onlays and saving badlydamaged teeth)
  • Minimally invasive dentistry (conserving tooth structure to minimize the need for future root treatment)
  • Root canal treatments
  • Smile design (improving the appearance of old or failing front crowns, for example)
  • The aesthetic zone (front teeth)
  • Immediate implants (implants that are restored on the same day as the implant surgery)
  • Bone grafting (creating additional support to allow implant treatment)
  • Full arch implants (a fixed bridge solution instead of a denture)

After hours

When he is not transforming patient’s lives, Duncan is kept busy entertaining his two young boys. He is also a keen surfer, skier, and golfer. He regularly plays in both touch rugby and five-a-side football teams.
