A family friendly practice

If you are looking for a children’s dentist, and you are an adult member of The Gentle Touch, we can offer your little ones dentistry on the NHS.

Children’s dentistry

Children should have a happy and relaxed introduction to visiting the dentist. That’s why we greet children with smiles and we always explain what we are doing. Most of all, we hope your child not only gets used to visiting the dentist, but also enjoys the experience.

We provide excellent care for our little ones and bigger ones. Children up to age 12 see Lisa, our Childsmile nurse (as well as their dentist). The over 12s will visit their dentist every six months.

All children’s treatments will be carried out by our dental therapists: Abbie, Lynn and Michelle. They are extremely experienced in looking after children’s teeth and they make their experience fun and enjoyable.

Here is a range of children’s treatments available with our dental therapists:

Advice and prevention
Fissure sealants
Fillings
Extractions of baby teeth
Children’s crowns
Mouth Guards

Childsmile (age 0-12)

We have been a ‘Childsmile’ practice since 2011. Childsmile is a national programme in Scotland, established to improve children’s dental health. Its main objective is to make it less likely that children will need fillings or have tooth decay.

Lisa Wood is our trained Childsmile nurse. Children up to the age of 12 see Lisa once each year in conjunction with their dental appointment.  In each of these visits, Lisa gives dietary advice, tooth brushing instruction and applies fluoride varnish when needed (with your consent).  It is also very important, of course, that children still brush twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, a low-sugar diet is very important.

Mouth guards for children

Abbie, Lynn and Michelle, our dental therapists, can provide a custom-made mouthguard (gum shield) for your child.

We recommend these when taking part in contact sports or sports where there is a risk of injury to the mouth. This might include hockey, rugby, boxing, martial arts, lacrosse and some racket sports.

Of course, we also provide mouthguards for the big kids too! Please give the practice a call to discuss if you need a mouthguard.
